He said nothing makes him happier than to have people come up to him after the show and say “Oh my God, that happened to me, too.”
“And now my mom will say, ‘Jo, let me tell you some stories you may have forgotten about so you can talk about it.’ ” “I love seeing my son get himself into a situation and then going on stage and telling the story,” Koy said with a laugh. Koy is also known for folding his family into his routines, often discussing hilarious situations growing up with his Filipino mom and the antics surrounding his teen son. “I loved how Eddie Murphy would exaggerate family stories yet you still believed him and related to him.” “I loved the great storytellers like Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor and Robin Williams,” he said. He said despite some rough times growing up, he was always pulled towards comedy, not as a coping mechanism but because he truly loved it. “I knew I wanted to be on stage making people laugh.”
“I knew by the time I was 11 that I wanted to be a stand-up comedian for a living,” he said.
